Couples Therapy for Intercultural Couples
Two backgrounds, one relationship. Sessions in English, Armenian, or both.
Some of your arguments aren’t really about the two of you.
They’re about what each family expects: what a holiday should look like, how money is shared, who gets called first, and what goes unsaid. When one of you grew up Armenian and the other didn’t, those differences can sit underneath ordinary disagreements and make them harder to settle.
Couples therapy gives you a place to sort out which parts belong to the two of you, and which parts came with you.
What couples bring
- How close the families are, and how much say parents have
- Holidays, traditions, and which family comes first
- Money: sharing it, helping relatives, and what’s expected
- Raising children between two cultures, and sometimes two languages
- Feeling like an outsider in your partner’s family
- Weddings, faith, and the decisions families care about most
In English, Armenian, or both
I speak Armenian. We can work in English, in Armenian, or move between the two, so no one has to translate their way through a session.
When one partner doesn’t speak Armenian, we keep to the language you can both use, so you’re both fully in the room.
How I work
As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I work on the pattern between you, and on the families and histories each of you brings. Sessions are in my Encino or Studio City office, or online across California, Nevada, and Oregon.
Both of you belong in the room
Neither culture is the problem to be fixed. The work is finding the version of family, closeness, and loyalty that the two of you choose together.
Questions
Do we both need to be Armenian?
No. This is for couples where one of you is Armenian, too. We work in whichever language lets you both take part.
Can our parents be part of this?
If a conversation needs parents or siblings present, a family meeting can be arranged separately.
Is it private pay?
Yes, and I walk you through fees when we first speak.
